Windshield woes

Yahoo Message Number: 1047
Okay to keep my irritation in line with my stress level I decided I
needed to call my insurance company and report the broken windshield so
it could be replaced before our trip out west in two weeks. I had been
hit with a stone about one inch below the top of the windshield right in
front of the drivers seat. Since it was up in that black area of the
glass I didn't see anything from the inside, but over the next few hours
a crack came down the glass about ten inches and then took a right turn
for another 12 or 14 inches.

Since USAA doesn't write RV policies anymore they put me thru to
Progressive when I bought the unit and they wrote the policy. I called
them and was told "no problem, we've got Duncan Systems who handles all
the motorhome glass" The kid was helpful and took the info and put me on
hold while he contacted them. I had told him the chassis was a Chevy
Kodiak 5500 series, etc. He came back and asked if it had an overhang
and of course I said yes. He said "so it's a class C" and I said "yes,
sort of at least by definition or a Super C by others". He said "no
problem, since it's on a van chassis one of our regular glass guys can
do it".

A call from him about ten minutes later was a bit more iffy on that. He
said they all refused because it was on a commercial truck chassis and
they don't do them with motorhomes mounted. I would have to go to a
Chevy dealer. I went on to 'splain my previous problems with trying to
get any Chevy dealer in the area to do anything on it and he said he'd
get back to me.

He called with the name of a glass dealer in my area who said he'd do
it, but it would be extra labor. The kid from Progressive has approved
the extra labor and told me my $100 deductible would be all I'd pay and
the work was authorized. I called the glass company and talked to the
owner who had spoken with the insurance company. He said he didn't know
why the others wouldn't do such a thing, but he'd like to come by and
take a look. I met him yesterday and he's an RV guy so he was very
interested in the coach. Anyway the bottom line is he said it wasn't any
different than doing any other 5500 truck because the overcab with the
bed didn't affect anything in the windshield area. The only thing is
they need two guys because of the height and size. Maybe other companies
don't want to tie up two guys.

He's coming over Monday morning to do the job and said I might want to
meet him there and watch since I might find it interesting. Seemed like
a really nice young guy and we talked about RV's for quite a while. I
hope it goes well :-)

Take care,
Greg

OK, you had my stress level going up and up as I read. I was getting prepared for the worst and then it appears you will have a satisfactory (happy?) ending.

Do let know on Monday.

Hope all goes well.

After owning this I keep trying that :-)

I just got a call from the glass company who is doing the job Monday and
he said Progressive told him they wouldn't authorize the extra labor to
have two installers there. This is after the agent I talked to the other
day said it wouldn't be a problem. He's not calling the agent directly
who took the origninal claim and checking on that. He said it would get
done and we'd fight it out with Progressive if need be, but he had to
have two guys there to do it.

I can certainly see that it would be a two man job to handle that big
glass over the front of that big truck so hopefully it's not going to be
an issue when he talks to the agent.

OK, I just emptied my coach so Four Winds can have it picked up today and driven to the factory. They will have the coach probably several weeks while they repair the problems it has (and had when it left the factory!)

Since I no longer will have access to "RVing" for several weeks/months, during the peak time when we would be using it, but will still have the payments/insurance/added mileage when they finish with it, all I can say is, RVing AIN"T FUN!!!
