2001 Kodiak

Yahoo Message Number: 11590
Hello, I am interested in purchasing a 2001 Kodiak MotorHome that does have a Ford F350 Triton V10. It is a VXL2000. It is being sold local to me by the son of the owner who has passed away. It has 58k miles.

Does anyone here have this model? Wanting to know any known problems, miles per gallon and any little tidbits I should know before laying down money.

Thanks in advance!
Denise

Wrong place for that question Denise. Members here own or and interested in the Chev Kodiak chassis Super C motorhome. But, there might just be a member or two who owned the unit you are considering.

I'd suggest you try the forums at RV.net and iRV2.com

Thanks for the help Don. One other question though...is the "Kodiak" part the same? It is confusing to me LOL as some are on a Chevy frame but others are on a Ford! I am tryimg to find out if there has been any issues with the camper part of it too!

I am wanting a MH to haul my horses!

I will check out the places you suggested. Thanks so much!
Denise

Denise, what does your horse trailer weigh fully loaded with the horse(s) and all equipment you cart around?

You may well need something much larger than even the Kodiak chassis series of motorhomes.

If you are over 5,000 then a Ford E450 based unit won't help you either.

Owners here have a Kodiak chassis with either a Duramax Diesel engine or a Chev 8.1 Vortec gas engine.

Wrong type of Kodiak, but I do have some insight for you on the Triton V10 engine that caused me to stop looking at them. The early V10, I believe up to the '02 year model has a problem with blowing spark plugs out. You might want to search the internet for "Triton V10 spark plugs" before making the investment.

Wink

Don,
I actually have a Brenderup 2 horse trailer. It is a European trailer built to be hauled by a sedan as there generally aren't big trucks in Europe! I haul it safely with a Toyota Rav4! That is why I bought this particular trailer. Way more expensive than an American trailer but since I already had the RAV I wanted to keep it. Trailer weighs 1950 lbs and my horses weigh approximately 2000 lbs together but I mostly just haul 1 horse at a time unless it is to the vet.

I think this one should be able to haul that amount.

Thanks Wink! I will call my sister on this. She is the service writer for a local Toyota/Ford dealership. She works on the Toyota side but she certainly has access to the knowledge of the mechanics there. My neighbor just bought a used Four Winds and I looked at hers today and it has the Triton V10. I don't know what model hers is but it isn't new.

Just hearing that it blows spark plugs is enough to make me back off!!! I don't know squat doodly about motors. I will call my sister though and ask her. I do take my horse trailer to a local RV place at times - I had the electrical stuff rewired (first place did it WRONG!) and have had them grease it for me so I was going to ask them about this particular one. But this could be the reason it hasn't sold. It is a 2001 with 58k miles. It is immaculate on the inside. He was originally asking 16,500, then 14,500 now down to 12,400. I know that is a good price but only if it doesn't have issues. Tires look brand new.

It was not clear to me how wide spread the plug problem was as our first MH was a 2000 Triple E Commander that had the V10 and we experienced no problems with it. It also got surprisingly good MPG.

Denise, if I were buying a unit of that vintage I'd check the receiver receiver (hitch) as many at that time were only 3500 lbs. That could be a limitation. In addition the GCWR would be as well if the GCWR less the GVWR is low. Many of that vintage, I think, were only 3500 lbs, matching the hitch. That could cause you problems.

Now, I assume you meant to say E350 for the chassis not F350. We have some truck specialists on the forum but I think the F series 12 years ago was MUCH heftier than the E. If it is an F it might well be a different ballgame and you could have better towing capacity.

I didn't realize the RAV was rated to tow 4000 lbs. Learn something every day.

Just did some checking on FAV4World.com. With the V6 the RAV is rated to tow 3500 lbs (The 4 cylinder is only 1500 lbs). I guess that means only one horse can go with you. :)

With that trailer weight you might be able to get by with the and E350 Ford chassis.

Be careful with tires that look brand new. Ask the sales person to show you the mfg date on the tires of any unit that you look at. Most motor homes spend more time sitting than driving, You want to make sure that the tires are not more that 5 years old. Older tires with very low miles have been known to come apart on the highway.

Don I took a picture of the markings on the "truck" part of it. I thought the E was an F but I am looking at the pic I snapped of it and it says E-350 Super Duty. I would have to check out that towing capacity. I just assumed (and you know what they say about that!) that a MH could tow quiet a bit as I see them hauling vehicles/horse trailers/boats all the time. But, my babies are in that trailer. I would have to be certain. The trailer is a dream to haul - it stops when I stop, goes where I go. Even having had to slam on my breaks a few times has never caused it to fishtail. It has caused me to want to get out and drop kick this little old lady who pulled out in front of me near Sam Rayburn Dam last month. Bless her heart - she just hauls out in front of me - I was only going about 35 thank God. I would have T-boned her had I not hit my breaks hard.

There are some pictures of my RAV4 on FAV4World.com when it was new and when I got the Brenderup. I do have the V6. That little puppy will snap your head back if I hit the accelerator. It has 269 hp where as the same year (2007) Tacoma truck only had 239. As I said in an earlier post, my sister is a service writer for Toyota and they all told me it would haul considerably more than 3500 but people will always push the limits. I generally am only hauling one horse - when we go camping hubby is hauling them with his Tundra. Actually, it hauls best in my RAV4 when I have both horses in the trailer. It is more "balanced". And I drive about 45-50 mph and I live on the coastal flatlands. I am a very cautious chick!

Thanks Bob. This one is owned by an individual. His father passed away and he is selling it for his mother. It probably hasn't been on a trip in a while. That is a concern to me - that rascal has 6 tires and to replace them would be kinda pricey!!! But, I am a sissy girl and have never changed a tire. I want this so I can go off camping whether hubby goes or not so good tires are a must.

Motorhome tires have an effective life of 7 years according to the tire
manufacturer. One could suggest that's a heckuva sales ploy, but
statistics back it up and most of us adhere to it pretty closely. My
tired look great, but are approaching the 7 yr birthday so I'll be
replacing them. It's a bit more on the Kodiak Super C's with 19.5"
tires...let's call it just south of $3000....not for the faint of heart,
but it's better than a catastrophic blow out that might cause a crash.
The date code for the tires will be on the sidewall and are four digits.
The first two indicate the month of manufacture and the second two
indicate the year.

Also, be sure to check all around the ceiling joints inside cupboards,
etc for signs of water damage. Check the inside of the overcab which is
notorious on class C's for leaks. Looks down the sides and see if there
appears to be any ripples or bubbles in the fiberglass. This indicates
there has been a leak and the glass is delaminating. This is a HUGE red
flag and a sign to walk away...no, run away. Look for soft spots on the
floor near showers, tubs, toilets, sinks.

There are some checklists online for things to check when buying a
motorhome. You don't want to make a costly mistake. Good luck with your
search, but be smart too.
