Just came in and unit is putting out a smell like it
is hot at first thought it was gas on stove. Does it put out a odor
if it freezes up or maybe just gave up the ghost ?!

Do you have a heat strip? If so maybe the control board or thermostat went bad. Just a thought.

Not sure,

A failure we have had is in the start up capacitor. If it blows then you will have a burning electrical smell, and then the unit does not function. We have had this happen twice through the years.

It continues to blow air but not too cold but dont want it to run that much
for fear of burn wires or such
