Florida travel December 15, 2008, 07:33:54 am Yahoo Message Number: 2047Question for you folks familiar with traveling to the Keys. We're heading for Titusville for Christmas and are considering headingdown to Key West the day after Christmas. We've never been there andthis seems like a good time to try it with gas being cheap. The last time I went to the Keys, it was 1971 and we only went toPenneycamp park to go diving so I've never been all the way, and hippiesin a van is different than with a wife, motorhome, toad, and dog :-)Is it feasible to drive all the way from Titusville to Key West in oneday without killing ourselves? I'm a 60 mph guy with the toad behind. Isthe traffic terrible?I've checked for reservations and the parks are all full although theysay we might be able to get a night at the last minute. The Naval AirStation at Key West has a park and the girl there said they only doreservations for active duty so retirees are first come first served. She also said at worst, we could use a dry spot and they have plenty ofthem at two locations.Take care, Greg Quote Selected
Re: Florida travel Reply #1 – December 15, 2008, 08:55:58 am Yahoo Message Number: 2049Amazing how gas prices have an impact on your urge to travel.I've been wondering about accelerating a trip to the Grand Canyon (and Monument Valley, Arches, Mt. Evans etc). Much of your trip this past year Greg.If these gas prices stick for some time I think we could see interest in MHs increase - and gas guzzlers like our Tahoe. On the other hand, this morning crude is coming back close to $50 based on the threat of OPEC cuts (will OPEC ever actually cut production or will they all keep agreeing and then individually think they can pump more?).We drove back to Windsor Sat/Sun and have to say the Tahoe sure makes the drive easy. When we drove to FLA in October with the MH we were surprised how few motorhomes were on the highway compared with prior years. On Saturday and Sunday we saw far more than we'd usually see in mid-December on the way back north for Xmas. Makes me wonder if the fuel prices are behind this?DonOn 15-Dec-08, at 7:33 AM, Greg Gimlick wrote: Quote Selected
Re: Florida travel Reply #2 – December 15, 2008, 09:20:36 am Yahoo Message Number: 2050I know what you mean. We went on vacation this past July when dieselfuel was costing about $5 a gallon. WOW! we stayed closer to home andtraveled half the distance as the prvious year's vacation and spent thesame on fuel.It is funny, though, how the media hypes up information. When you hearOPEC is going to pull back production by a couple million barrels a daywe think that a lot, but in realty a couple million barrels a day fromthose guys is like a drop in the bucket.I agree, though, prices will not be this low forever. In our local townin Florida the lowest for diesel right now is $2.52. This is half ofwhat we spent per gallon just 5 months ago. Quote Selected

That area is one of the most impressive places I've ever seen andwe really want to go back with more time.QuoteOn the other hand, this morning crude is coming back close to $50 basedon the threat of OPEC cutsThis is insane, I'm sure gas will go up in the next few days becausespeculators will want to buy before it rises and it will drive themarket price up. Experts (if there are any) say that oil prices need tobe around $90 a barrel for everything to be stable, but even when theywere at that level we saw price fluctuations that were without reason.QuoteOn Saturday and Sunday we saw far more than we'd usually see inmid-December on the way back north for Xmas. It's influenced our thoughts ofgoing all the way to Key West instead of staying in central FL for thewhole time. Since we've given thought to trying to sell the motorhome inthe spring we thought we might try to do the trip in case we don't endup with an RV. Then again the chances of selling one look awfully grim. We're thinking of going back to a truck and a fifth wheel instead of atrailer this time, but it also seems strange to buy a big truck now.Take care, Greg Quote Selected
