Engine Fan Noise

Yahoo Message Number: 2999
I just test drove a Seneca MS and after 10 miles going up a gradual hill on Interstate 65 in Alabama a LOUD fan noise came on and never shut off. I assume that it was the radiator fan going to high speed. Questions: Should it be that loud? How often does it come on? The temp was 68 outside what it be like if it was 100? Was it working right? We really liked the Seneca but I don't know if we could live with the fan. What have been the experiences of other people?

Thanx,
Joel

Can't help you on the diesel since all of our diesels have been in the back and we heard little unless I left the mic on in the backup camera. Our Kodiak is a gasser and it too has a fan that will kick in and yes, it can be loud and annoying. Seems to kick in very quickly at times when starting an uphill climb - even one that is not very steep.

I have not noticed that on mine.

Are you sure it is a fan?
On mine the whatever filter self cleaner comes on, a green light will be on and then goes out.

Some of that will be fan noise and some will be Turbo noise. When you are climbing a hill the Turbo will also kick in and that also requires additonal cooling. With that said it should have shut off after a reasonable amount of time. The other thing could have been the exhaust brake. If you were climbing and then started down another grade the exhaust brake will kick in and between the two it can get loud. I usually turn the exhaust brake off unlee I'm going down a grade or in stop and go traffic.

That is not normal. I have only had the fan come on 2 time. Both when temps were close to 100 degress and on a long climb. Only stayed on a few minutes until engine cooled down and stayed off after that. What year was the Seneca?

The Seneca was a 2009 made in August of 2008. I am glad to hear that it is not normal since I am thinking of ordering a 2010.

It is very normal to have the fan cycle in and out. It should start to come on around 200 degrees and be full on around 210. That being said the dash gage isn't that reliable as an acurate indication. Mine when fully warmed up will indicate about 200 degrees on the dash gage. On the Edge Attitude the temp will be 192 to 195 fan off and flat level with the eng not working. When I start up a grade the temp on the attitude will start to climb and the dash gage will stay constant. When the fan starts to come on, the dash gage will begin to rise and has been as high as 225. Soon after the fan has reached full on the temp comes down and the fan will gradually deminish. The noise is only temporary and is somthing that should not be of concern. It should be music to the ears as that way you know that your cooling system is working properly. If you don't hear the fan come on when pulling a grade it is time to worry. These units are big and heavy and if the cooling system fan is not working it will overheat in a heartbeat and bad things will happen. The fan noise or music is quite normal.

We also see these same temperatures. It will take a minute or two when
going back down the hill before the fan will slow down. I also don't
believe the outside temperature matters vary much. Once the engine
starts to warm up it's going to keep warming up. I am sure that
driving style makes a larger difference. We live in the mountains and I
am fairly aggressive about keeping my speed up as much as possible going
up hills.

Ours is a 2007 diesel.

Also, just checking if someone on here was going south on I25 in New
Mexico yesterday, in a Dutchmen I think.

I think its the intercooler for the diesel turbo - its a scary sound the first time if you don't expect it or have never heard this before in a turbo diesel.

No worries...
