Battery thoughts?

Okay, looking for some opinions here. Since the day I bought my 2007
Jayco Greyhawk 32SS new, it's had one deep cycle 12v battery. It has
been replaced once and last year a service guy told me he couldn't
believe I was only running one battery.

Well, we don't boondock so it's seldom ever being used anyway, but the
second one has just died so it's time to rethink the original setup. The
two obvious choices are:

Go with two 12v batteries in parallel

Go with two 6v batteries in series

Over the years the favored setup seems to be the golf cart batteries in
series, but at $145 each, that's pretty stout. Of course the decent 12v
batteries are ticking $100 so they're not terribly far apart. It's still
$100 more for the 6v by the time you're done.

My thought was to turn it into a 40' diesel pusher, but reality had to
set in sometime :-)

What are most of you running for the coach side of your rig?

Take care,
Greg

I am running 2 deep cycle boat batteries from Wal-mart

They seem to do good as long as I remember to hit the isolator switch before leaving storage

Greg, we had no problem with ours and our use was similar to yours - no boondocking.

The danger with 2 x 6 is that if one 6 goes you can't use the other one. In our second DP we had 4 x 6 and had one gone we could have disconnected its mate and gone with 2 x 6 until we got a replacement. If I'd added a battery to my 32SS it would have been another 12V for that reason.

Sort of like a recent article I read about camping vs RV'ing.....I guess
I'm not a camper any more. I think all those years in the Army took that
desire to be miserable away :-)

Well you know, that's a darned good point! I hadn't thought of that.

You may have made up my mind....along with the $700 bill for new toad
tires today. No wonder we keep you around! :-)

Take care,
Greg

I try, I try Greg.

Dave Sparke sent me a photo of his new set of park wheels the other day - VERY nice. I haven't seen the photo posted here yet. (Dave, Dave, do you copy. :) )

It answers the question as to why he is towing a Sierra now rather than the Canyon. Needed it to haul the new wheels.

He is now practicing to join this group. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrpq5A-KAoA

Probably the car. Back in '31 they did not have the most efficient electrical systems.

last year I swapped out to two 6 volt golf cart batteries. It helped a great deal but I still think my 'dumb' voltage LED turns to yellow pretty fast?
It seems to me I posted exacting detals about the swap out and pics? Also look carefully and where the connections take place.

I'd like to shoot my monitor panel anyway. It's the first one I've had
where the only thing that seems to be accurate is the fresh water level.
The grey reads empty all the time and the black is erratic.

I searched and found the photos, but didn't see the thread discussing
it. Connections aren't an issue and the tray is certainly big enough to
configure any way one wants.

Greg
