Question for you folks familiar with traveling to the Keys.

We're heading for Titusville for Christmas and are considering heading
down to Key West the day after Christmas. We've never been there and
this seems like a good time to try it with gas being cheap.

The last time I went to the Keys, it was 1971 and we only went to
Penneycamp park to go diving so I've never been all the way, and hippies
in a van is different than with a wife, motorhome, toad, and dog :-)

Is it feasible to drive all the way from Titusville to Key West in one
day without killing ourselves? I'm a 60 mph guy with the toad behind. Is
the traffic terrible?

I've checked for reservations and the parks are all full although they
say we might be able to get a night at the last minute. The Naval Air
Station at Key West has a park and the girl there said they only do
reservations for active duty so retirees are first come first served.
She also said at worst, we could use a dry spot and they have plenty of
them at two locations.

Take care,
Greg

Amazing how gas prices have an impact on your urge to travel.

I've been wondering about accelerating a trip to the Grand Canyon (and Monument Valley, Arches, Mt. Evans etc). Much of your trip this past year Greg.

If these gas prices stick for some time I think we could see interest in MHs increase - and gas guzzlers like our Tahoe.

On the other hand, this morning crude is coming back close to $50 based on the threat of OPEC cuts (will OPEC ever actually cut production or will they all keep agreeing and then individually think they can pump more?).

We drove back to Windsor Sat/Sun and have to say the Tahoe sure makes the drive easy. When we drove to FLA in October with the MH we were surprised how few motorhomes were on the highway compared with prior years. On Saturday and Sunday we saw far more than we'd usually see in mid-December on the way back north for Xmas. Makes me wonder if the fuel prices are behind this?

I know what you mean. We went on vacation this past July when diesel
fuel was costing about $5 a gallon. WOW! we stayed closer to home and
traveled half the distance as the prvious year's vacation and spent the
same on fuel.

It is funny, though, how the media hypes up information. When you hear
OPEC is going to pull back production by a couple million barrels a day
we think that a lot, but in realty a couple million barrels a day from
those guys is like a drop in the bucket.

I agree, though, prices will not be this low forever. In our local town
in Florida the lowest for diesel right now is $2.52. This is half of
what we spent per gallon just 5 months ago.

That's well worth the time and money. I say that even though I did it
when gas was $3.70 for most of our trip...it would be a lot cheaper this
month. That area is one of the most impressive places I've ever seen and
we really want to go back with more time.

This is insane, I'm sure gas will go up in the next few days because
speculators will want to buy before it rises and it will drive the
market price up. Experts (if there are any) say that oil prices need to
be around $90 a barrel for everything to be stable, but even when they
were at that level we saw price fluctuations that were without reason.

I wouldn't be surprised if it helped. It's influenced our thoughts of
going all the way to Key West instead of staying in central FL for the
whole time. Since we've given thought to trying to sell the motorhome in
the spring we thought we might try to do the trip in case we don't end
up with an RV. Then again the chances of selling one look awfully grim.
We're thinking of going back to a truck and a fifth wheel instead of a
trailer this time, but it also seems strange to buy a big truck now.

Take care,
Greg

Hey Greg,

Looks like we'll miss you at the Great Outdoors by just a few days.
We've been going down to Titusville after Christmas for many years as we
used to live there and still have many friends and family in the area.
