2007 Grayhawk double slide

Yahoo Message Number: 1604
I have been reading numerous posts from Jayco owners and am getting
rather queasy. We are seriously considering a 2007 Jayco Grayhawk
(Double slide) that is a used coach in excellent condition and with
only 5100 miles on the engine.

We have had a 1998 Dolphin (35' Single Slide) and are considering a
switch to a newer vehicle and Class C.

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of the 2007 Grayhawk? Would you
hesitate to buy one?

We are complete rookies about Jayco and about Class C.

We will appreciate any and all help you can give us.

By the way, if you own one of these, what is your typical MPG?

Many thanks,
Richard

Richard,

The Jayco is a good unit just the chassis may need some up-grade. All RVs have issues as you know. I get 7.5 to 8..0 doing 65 and pulling a 20 foot trailer with about 6,000 pounds.

Thank you so much for your valuable information! You have been quite helpful! We are definitely leaning toward the purchase of the Grayhawk as it has everything we need for comfortable long-distance travel. That's pretty good MGP with pulling a trailer with that amount of weight!

Thanks again for taking your time to share your experience and knowledge,
Richard

Hi Richard

I've got a 2007 Jayco Greyhawk 32SS on the Kodiak chassis, gas powered
with double slides. I've had it for a year and overall I have to say I'm
happy. This June we took a 4800 miles trip from NC to Denver, Moab,
Monument Valley, NM, AZ, TX and home towing a 2008 Vue. This was the
first long trip with it and there were a few difficulties along the way,
but nothing exceptional.

Front A/C unit quit in NM when it was 110 degrees. Fortunately we had a
rear unit that kept us from suffering. Turned out to be a wire off the
back of the thermostat.

We lost a rivet in an exhaust hanger and I had to crawl under it to
replace it with a bolt. The dealer has also done a service notice repair
that added an additional brace and hanger at no expense to me.

We developed a "clunk" somewhere in the rear of the coach we've yet to
figure out. The dealer says he hears nothing out of the ordinary during
acceleration or decel. It takes a while to happen and I think it's
suspension sound. I can find no loose bolts, etc and I've gone over it
twice.

My only complaint is getting the darned thing serviced by a GM dealer.
Nobody within 80 miles of me will do it because of its height. This
makes me worry a bit on the road.

The unit itself is great. I hate that they don't clean up the wire
cuttings, sawdust, etc behind the cabinets and drawers...you'll find
them if you pull them out to look for leaks, etc. I sealed some holes in
the bottom where wire bundles come up thru. These are small issues that
should be done at the factory and aren't. This is an industry wide problem.

We REALLY like the floorplan. All the systems are working well and I
don't have to fight with my dealer over warranty repairs.

It drives well although there is some body roll that can be taken out
with after market upgrades. I haven't done any of them yet. I don't
drive 70 with it and that also makes a difference. The car is restricted
to 65 mph towing and I usually try to keep it under 60 which also helps
with gas mileage. We got 7 mpg towing the 4000 lb Vue. I've gotten 8
without towing. This is the same as I used to get with my 2500 truck
towing a 31 ft trailer.

The turning radius is exceptional and backing into sites is a breeze.

My rear endcap seemed to be separating shortly after I bought the unit,
but the dealer talked with Jayco and repaired it here. The fix was
removing the short screws in the retaining strip and replacing them with
3 inch screws. That was long before our trip and it shows no signs of
having any problems.

Take care,
Greg

Richard, we two a Tahoe and it does the job fairly well (not quite like the Ambassador though - can't beat 960 torque.

Our mileage towing is 7.4 mpg - which is a bit less than the Ambassador. Last weekend we used the MH without towing and got a high (for us) 8.3 mpg and that may have been due to running much of the trip around 55 mph.

On the qualilty front, The Jayco isn't much different than the Journey (worst we've had) and Ambassador - perhaps a little better since less complex. But, not eve close to our Triple E.

Greg,

I'm sorry to hear that you have had so many difficulties with your Greyhawk and hope that you will be problem-free for the rest of your journeys in it. Your trip this June sounded delightful! You certainly saw some varied scenery.

Thank you for your input! It is very valuable for us!

Happy trails,
Richard

Don,

The Triple E looks like it is made with excellent craftsmanship. That 7.4 mpg seems like pretty decent mileage with towing a Tahoe.
Many thanks for your response; it is quite helpful!

Happy trails,
Richard

Hi Richard,

We have a 2007 Greyhawk 33DS that we purchased new last Dec. We love the
floorplan but have had quite a few disappointments in regards to overall
quality from Jayco. If you haven't already, I'd suggest you study the
messages and in particular the photos posted here. This will cover a lot
of Pros & Cons and may reduce the possibility of some later surprises.

We've had good response from the factory service folks in regards to
repairs. Our local dealer is OK but we've really had to stay on top of
them to make sure things get done correctly.

Our mileage has been sevenish pulling a Toyota Tacoma.

If you don't mind sharing, it would be interesting to the rest of us to
learn what a used 2007 Kodiak/Greyhawk sells for. FYI and comparison,
the drive-out cost before taxes for our new 2007 was $68K and change.

Also there have been several factory recalls and Service Bulletin
upgrades to the Greyhawks. I think most of them have been covered in
this forum but in any case you might want to verify that all appropriate
ones have been completed on your rig.

Good luck Richard, Bill

Bill,

Many thanks for your comments! The floorplan and the Kodiak Chassis are what have swayed us in the direction of the Greyhawk.

I appreciate your mentioning about the recalls and Service Bulletin upgrades. We will be on the alert for those. Also, I will do some searching for the photos you mentioned.

If you don't mind my asking, did your $68,000 drive-away price involve a trade-in? Do you recall the original sticker price? If you don't mind sharing that, it may help us in negotiations. The dealership is asking significantly more than what you paid. Of course, they also said that there was some room for negotiation. I'll say!

Thanks again,
Richard

He did better than I did :-) The sticker on my 32SS was $105,000 with
all the options and the drive away price with tax, tags, etc was right
at $78,000. I had no trade in and put half down.

Take care,
Greg

Richard,

The price on the sticker was $106,457 and we did not have a trade in.
I don't know how others have fared price-wise but as I said we
purchased it last Dec. I think the unit had been on the lot for quite
a while and it was the end-of-the year so I guess they were wanting
to move it. They had already discounted it pretty significantly but
there wasn't much negotiation involved. My wife (the negotiator in
the family) told them we'd consider it for a $70K drive-out price.
They came back with $73.3K and a couple days later we bought it.

Those figures provide some idea of the incredibly inflated MSRP
prices on these things. The figure we paid was about 35% off the
sticker and the dealer still made money of the deal.

One other suggestion. In the past when we've purchased used
motorhomes we insisted on being able to contact the previous owner.
That requirement has caused numerous "good deals" in the past to fall
through but we stuck to our guns and in the end were always happy
that we did.

Good luck, Bill

Bill,

Great information and great advice! We will go loaded with ammunition to the negotiations! Many, many thanks for taking your time to help us. We really appreciate you.

That's what this dealership is asking. However, this is a 2007 -- used -- 5100 miles. I really think we are going to have significant "wiggle room" when we negotiate.

Thanks,
Richard

Have you checked the NADA values? You can do that online.

Take care,
Greg

Good point. I hadn't even thought of that. I'll do it. Thanks for the suggestion.
