Upcoming Jayco service visit

Yahoo Message Number: 1760
Just heard back from Jayco on timing. In April we were told that the
paint work would be done at their facility at Topeka. Now it appears
they have a paint shop handy at the Service Center in Middlebury.
They plan to keep our Greyhawk in the shop overnight (so the paint can
dry) and are booking us into a motel in Elkhart for Monday night - at
their cost.

On Tuesday they will replace the exhaust hanger and if that doesn't
solve the hum/whine, they will then take it to Mor/Ryde (they do the
chassis stretching as I recall) to have the drive train worked on. I
sure hope they don't say that the sound is normal because the sound
makes it difficult to chat and listen to the radio - it is that loud
and annoying. I told them I wanted to take the home made hanger fix
off this weekend to see if the whine disappears and they suggested I
not do that in case a rough road results in more damage. I am,
however, thinking of taking the chain link out that holds the broken
bracket to the eye-bolt I put in the frame rail near the weld and
replacing it with something rubber that should not transmit vibration
but which should hold it secure - perhaps a bungee cord.

Don,

FWIW, I was lubing the driveline on my coach a couple weeks ago, and noticed that one of the grease zerks on the rear U-Joint had a small plastic cover on it that appeared to be a shipping cover. I doubt that the rear u-joint had any lube in it, and if not, there could be some vibration.

Also, there is a service bulletin for the Kodiak chassis for 2007 that addresses a vibration they can't seem to find. Apparently GM was requesting feedback for the service centers on the vibration complaints

My own "theory" is that if the driveline is attached to both the frame (carriers) and the rear axle, and if the weight distribution is off, then the frame is not aligned properly with the drive axle going down the road and there will be vibration... something to check.

Denny, I wonder if the GM service bulletin applies to a unit that has had the wheelbase extended? My understanding based on info you posted earlier for upfitters is that GM does not and will not take any responsibility for such drive trains.

I lubricated the driveline myself once and then a GMC truck dealer did it the second time. I didn't see an plastic covers.

BTW, our first DP was a 2004 Journey. When I had the 6 month chassis lubrication done at a Freightliner dealer, the mechanic called me to the pit and showed me the plastic cap still on the steering box. It had never been removed and it had been driven dry for 6 months. Winnie should have removed it at the factory and lubricated the steering mechanism.

Don, not sure the GM service centers would care... one of the Jayco owners will find out sooner or later... Denny

Denny you may recall that GM said customers of such extended WB vehicles should be told that GM does not carry parts for the drive train. I believe that my Greyhawk had a 3 section drivetrain vs 2 section that came stock (or 4 vs 3). Sure wish it was still parked outside the house - but those days are long gone for us now.

When Jayco replaced the hubcap that collapsed (plastic) I learned that it was a Jayco added part and did not come from GM.

Don they did my paint in Middlebury but it did not match perfectly.
Seems they do not take a sample as the sun does fade the paint but
just utlize the current paint they have in house which does not match
perfectly since it is new. Dane

That doesn't sound good. I'll let you know how close our's is at the end of the month.

Don

ps. Just got back from the US. A terrible weekend. On the second lap of practice something happened to the left front of my son's car and it locked up and he went across the grass and into a concrete wall. Car is a write-off.
