Road info December 26, 2013, 01:43:44 pm Yahoo Message Number: 12263Hi all, hope you had a great Christmas, I know we did. Denver istreating us well so far with semi-mild weather. Nights are getting downto around 20 - 25 so things are working well so far.We are beginning to look at some routes back to NC when the time comesand would like to go south.....yup, I want warmer weather :-)One route that comes up goes south on I-25 out of Denver to Raton Passwhere the planner takes us across Rte 64 and then Rte 87 to the east andsouth. On the maps it looks to be decent enough road, all state highway, but not interstate. In the summer, I wouldn't be concerned, but I'mwondering if anyone is familiar with that route and can advise. We might head down to Corpus and then across the gulf coast headed for home.I know we can stay on I-25 and go to Albuquerque and grab 40, but that'squite a bit further.Looking for advice on the safest winter route from Denver to warmerweather :-)Take care, Greg Quote Selected

We have done this via Amarillio - Lubbock and Amarillo - Abilene. We loved the stops along the way, and we loved the views - the main problem is other drivers. Some of the intercity connections are single lane roads - sometimes without much shoulder - and we saw some death defying passing that put us off the route. (But folks on the group can tell you I drive SLOW)Weather depending - and based on when you depart - you still have to be careful on bridges for ice until Amarillo, and south of that if there is bad weather. So I guess it depends on how tolerant you are of the Kamikaze drivers. ;-)Kevin Quote Selected

The Vue canonly be dragged at 65 anyway, so what the heck.QuoteWeather depending - and based on when you depart - you still have to becareful on bridges for ice until Amarillo, and south of that if there isbad weather. Our departure is flexible so we'll watch weather and select our window. The part from Raton over to Amarillo is the worry.QuoteSo I guess it depends on how tolerant you are of the Kamikaze drivers. ;-)I'm in Denver which I'm convinced is the training ground for aggressivedriving! Geez, it's terrible here...I say that every time though.Greg Quote Selected

This gets you out of the high elevation sooner. Good roads and some interesting country. If you want some warm weather. Take 287 to Wichita Falls, TX. Then take 281 to McAllen TX. Going to be nice the next few days after we get rid of the rain.BestRon Hall Quote Selected

My wife likes this idea for this time of year rather than riskthe weather thru the mountains. We'll do that another time. Ourdeparture time is up in the air...still waiting for a VERY pregnantdaughter-in-law to deliver.Right now the tentative plan is to do the 287 route. I'd love to missDallas, but I don't know how else we'll end up down around I-10 headingeast. We'll stop at Destin someplace and then on to Titusville by thesounds of it.....DW is chewing ideas faster than I can plan the routes :-)We know we want warm though :-)Greg Quote Selected
