I have the chance to pick up a coleman inverter modle PMP 2000. I am
starting from scratch and have never done this before. I want to run
the tv, sat, dvd and maybe make coffe without fireing up the gen. I
have read of transfer switches and auto switchs, and such, just don't
know yet. is this unit any good? it is new in the box and I can get it
for $100.

May do what you want. It is a Modified Sine Wave inverter. Some TV's and other digital equipment will not run on MSW. I have heard a lot about problems with coffee makers with digital clocks do not like MSW. That being said, my 1500 what MSW inverter runs my TV and non digiatal coffee maker very well. My DirecTV box also works well.
You will find that the inverter is the cheap apart. Protection fuse #2 wire and transfer switch will cost you more than the inverter.
