Back On The Road...!

Yahoo Message Number: 2070
We're heading out on the road tomorrow morning. Boy it sure does feel
good being able to say that! Various family and/or health issues (many
of which others on this forum are quite familiar with) have kept us
home-bound for 12 months now. This will likely be a fairly short trip
(to Central Fla) but here's hoping it will be the first of many more
in the coming year.

Here's hoping you all have a wonderful New Year!

Bill

Thanks Bill. Hope your trip is a great one. With the price of gas so nice now I'm trying to get the message to DW that we'd better start planning some nice trips.

We've just had some terrible weather since we returned for Xmas. Had a lot of snow and today it was 52 and it is disappearing quickly. We head back to FLA next Sat/Sunday. Will be nice to get back, but I have to say our granddaughter has sure made up for the bad weather.

Hi Gary,

Finally getting back on line after settling in. We are in Titusville
for most of Jan if family health back home remains OK.

Where are you? We just spent a few days at the Great Outdoors on site 53
Sunset and it was spectacular.

We're still on the road and will be home tomorrow, but we've covered
some ground we didn't expect to.

We went to the Great Outdoors...Key West....Grassy Key....Naples....Lazy
Days.....Silver Springs and will be leaving Savannah tomorrow for NC.

The rig is finally completely debugged as far as I can tell and
everything has been picture perfect with our 32SS Jayco. we've put
10,000 miles on it in just over a year and are really happy with the way
everything has settled out.

So....why were we at Lazy Days? DW really thinks she wants to go back to
a towable to have the bigger living room, king bed, and kitchen. She
really misses the room and that means I'll probably be putting this on
the market sometime after we get home and begin the process of going
that route. There are a couple of 5th wheels she really has fallen in
love with and we know how that will go :-)

Take care,
Greg

OUCH. Pity now that it is debugged. We did that with our Ambassador - debugged and then swapped for the Greyhawk - or is it Grayhawk. I can never remember. :)

There may come a time when DW saws she wants us to go smaller yet (Sprinter based unit). My answer is going to be simply. "Dear, if we switch now you have to be prepared to do your share of the driving." That should end the discussion quickly.

Glad it ran well. That means the next owner will be happy.

I won't say since I never remember either :-)

Maybe I should tell Kathy that when we talk about her desire for the
fifth wheel :-) This Greyhawk is sooooo easy to drive and set up that I
sorta really hate to see it go, but I also have been around this woman
long enough to know that I won't fight much if she REALLY wants the
bigger "home".

After the initial sealing of the wire access holes, and bad a/c
thermostat on the trip last summer it's been smooth sailing. I couldn't
be happier with a unit now. The new exhaust hanger does have a bit of a
whistle to it, but not one you notice from inside the coach. If I'm
outside I can put my foot against the pipe and the sound goes away so I
know it's a metal to metal vibration sounds.

I haven't given up on convincing her to stay with this 32SS, but I'm
guessing it's futile in the long run. I have no idea what it's going to
be like trying to sell a motorhome right now in this economy. Of course
the guys at Lazy Days are happy to take it as a trade, but then you're
looking at paying MSRP on whatever you buy and I just can't live with
that. I'm not even sure how I'll go about trying to sell it yet. Might
try eBay or just running an ad on rv.net or something.

If I didn't have that hanging over me I would have grabbed a deal on a
dually I saw the other day that was really great.

Take care,
Greg

Good to hear you had a wonderful trip! We are just up the road from
where you were on Sunset at site 8. Great location that's convenient to
everything and room to walk the dogs (priorities you know...).

Sounds like you tagged a lot of bases in Fla. on the way to your 10K
mile mark. Did you stay at a campground in Key West or further up in the
Keys?

If things go well here we plan to get over to Lazy Days for a day trip
during the RV Supershow. Quite an operation they have there for sure! We
bought our 2nd motorhome from them back in 1993 when they were at the
old location. They've sure come a long way.

By the way I read recently that Lazy Days was amidst serious financial
problems and I believe the next critical date from their lenders was
around mid January. Perhaps some even better deals can be had these
days.

Glad your trip was a good one Greg and good luck with your RV trading
dilemma.

Bill

How well I know :-) I often say our 9 pound Schnoodle has the most
expensive dog crate on earth....a 32SS :-)

Yup, we did some miles this trip and by the time I take it over to the
storage place tomorrow I may hit the 10,000 mile mark...gotta check to
be sure. I may still have another 100 miles to go. I'm going to get the
gen serviced in a week or so and that may be the trip that turns
it...how anti-climatic :-)

We checked into Boyds right at Key West, but they were full and so was
the next one up the island....can't remember the name. They are also WAY
expensive at about $130 a night. We ended up staying on the Naval Air
Station since I am retired military, but couldn't get a full hookup
site. We were in overflow which wasn't bad really except we were dry
camping. You could run the gen from 7 am til 11 pm if you needed to and
we did have to run for some a/c a few times, but not all day. The
biggest problem with a situation like this is many do run them all the
time and while noise really wasn't an issue, the fumes were. A couple of
times the winds were so we got the fumes from everyone else in the
"park" There were probably 100 rigs there.

All that being said....I can say I've seen Key West and while it's a
really interesting place, it's WAY to packed at Christmas. With cruise
ships unloading every day it was like walking the mall at Christmas. The
historical stuff is really nice, but I've aged beyond wanting to drink
my way thru a city and that town is geared towards partying :-)

We stayed at a park about 60 miles up the Keys at Grassy Key that we
really would have liked to stayed at longer, but they had a waterfront
spot for one night and we had a schedule too. I'll try to get some
photos up to show the places. We got back last night so it's a full days
job getting back to normal here and then the motorhome over to storage.
Naturally it's cold and rainy today.

I've never seen anything like it. They comp'd us a night in the rally
park since we were seriously trying to make something work on a 5th
wheel and truck they had, but in the end I couldn't bring myself to pull
the trigger knowing I was going to lose as much as I was.

Interesting, maybe that's why they were pushing so hard :-) I shouldn't
say pushing I guess because they really aren't high pressure, but you
can't leave either without a manager really trying to "make it work".
Once you convince them No is No, you're done in a hurry :-)

We had a great time and really hated to come home yesterday, but
reality doesn't wait :-\ It was good to have everything go as planned
and enjoy all the places we stopped. Fuel costs were soooooo much better
than our trip to Denver and points west last summer. The lowest I paid
for gas was $1.45 in SC and the most was $1.99 in Key West. Last summer
I averaged $3.74 on the trip out west.

Take care,
Greg

Indeed the cost and upkeep of those "crates" sure gets to be pricey...

Thanks for the Keys trip review. Will look forward to any pics you might have. Holy Smokes on that $130/night camping! I guess if folks will pay it... but wow just the same. The dry camping stint sounds much more reasonable, fumes and all.

You can't really describe Lazy Days to anyone who hasn't seen it first hand. Probably like trying to describe Disney to someone who has never seen it. It's an incredible operation and a real playground for RV junkies. I sincerely hope they are able to pull through this current downturn.

Holiday Rambler Presidential Suite 36RLT

The one thing it didn't have was a desk. One of the interesting things
about Lazy Days is their cabinet shop. The front closet in this unit
doesn't have a tall hanging spot for DW's dresses and they had a guy
come out to look at it. For $250 they'll take it in and rebuilt one side
matching all the wood so it looks like the other closet side, but this
would have the tall hanging spot.

Very heavy unit once you add all the options though, coming in at 14K
and a pin weight of about 3500 lbs. Definitely dually material. They had
a gorgeous dually someone had traded in with their 5er on a motohome
that I probably should have bought, but just couldn't pull the trigger
this trip. Still gotta get over losing so much money in the long run.

The other problem is this puts me back to driving my tow vehicle
everyday. Lot's to consider.

Interesting read on the Lazy Days situation you posted, thanks for that.

Take care,
Greg
