Re-keying storage compartment locks

Yahoo Message Number: 1042
My bro-in-law Jay met me at the motorhome today to look at the locks and
re-key them. There are 15 on my Greyhawk 32SS and it turns out that the
two on the outdoor stereo and shower doors are pinned and not bolted on
the back. That means you can't get them apart and they must be replaced.
The others have the arm screwed on the back and come out easily,
but......there's always a but, there is a problem getting them apart to
re-key them.

There is a small tab on the back of the shaft under the swing arm that
is peened in place. This means the locksmith can file the small bits of
burled metal off being VERY careful not to over file or he can just
order all new cylinders. Since we didn't want to spend the day filing
all the tangs off Jay is going to check on prices for new cylinders.
With the amount of time it would take to do the filing (assuming all
went well) Jay said no one could afford to have it done. He doesn't know
why they would do them this way, but the industry probably has some
reason for it. He measured the cylinders and will get me a price.

Assuming you could just take the cylinders out and there wasn't the
problem getting them apart he said you could plan on $8 - $15 each to be
re-keyed depending on the rates in your area. He also said if you decide
to do that, you should remove them all and take them to a locksmith so
he doesn't nail you for all the time it takes to get them out and
re-install them. He figured he can order me a set to install cheaper
because of the way they're constructed.

Not what we expected when we got into the job. If need be, I'll remove
them and file them down before I call Jay.

Take care,
Greg

Thanks for the info Greg. Nothin's ever as easy as it seems it ought to be eh?
One of the options I was considering was to replace them all with Ace locks. Here's a link to the CW site:
http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm/Outdoor-and-RV-Accessories/RV-Maintenance/RV-Storage--Maintenance/7/8-Ace-Storage-Door-Locks/4pack/skunum=11535
You can get a set of 4 keyed the same for $27 bucks. Now then... I wonder if a locksmith could get a full set of 15 keyed the same? Or as an alternative, would be at all cost effective to get several sets and have them re-keyed the same. My last coach had these types of locks and they were far superior mechanically to standard (751 type) units. Just a thought...

I looked at these the other night and was wondering the same thing.
They're really nice locks and a lot less apt to be popped by someone
trying to get in. I don't know if CW can get enough all the same or not
or if they're re-keyable. Jay is checking with a couple of suppliers on
my locks so hopefully I'll know something soon. One of my questions with
the CW Ace locks is whether they come with an offset lever that's
required on my storage compartments. No biggie if the ones off the old
ones would fit or if the Ace locks have a long enough barrel so they
don't need the offset.

Take care,
Greg

My bro-in-law Jay just emailed me and said these locks are outrageously
expensive so we'd do the job ourselves and file off the peened edges. I
told him we'll wait til I get back from the trip as this is going to be
a long job and there's too much other stuff going on before that.

Take care,
Greg

Wanted to also mention that they have boxes of 25 keyed alike.

It would really be nice to know which locks will fit our MHs.

I think I'd buy a box of 25 for $100 to $200 and change them all and have 10 in reserve.

Man if these will fit they're a lot cheaper than anything we've seen
around. I didn't measure the depth of the cylinder, but Jay did so I'll
ask him tomorrow how long it was....or I could go measure one myself.
